Skip this unless you're a .NET developer already using Semantic Kernel and just need the latest code snippet. It doesn't teach the 'why' behind function calling.

Developers already in the Semantic Kernel ecosystem who need a quick syntax update.
No conceptual explanation; it's a code-paste exercise.
Developers already in the Semantic Kernel ecosystem who need a quick syntax update.
Beginners trying to understand what function calling is or how it works conceptually.
Staring at the `Program.cs` file in the sandbox, the instructions told me to copy-paste an entire block of code to enable automatic function invocation. I did. I ran it. It worked. And I learned absolutely nothing.
This isn't a course. It’s a documentation page disguised as a training module. There is zero explanation of the underlying mechanism. What is the `Kernel` doing? How does it parse the function signatures? How does it decide which function to call based on the prompt? The module doesn't care. It just shows you the new, simplified syntax in the latest Semantic Kernel SDK.
It’s for people who already know how all this works and just need the updated method call. For a student like me trying to piece together how these agentic systems are built, this was a waste of time. I spent 40 minutes clicking through, and the only thing I came away with is a code snippet I could have gotten from a GitHub repo's README. It’s free, yes, but my time isn’t. I ended up finding a YouTube video that actually drew diagrams and explained the request-tool-call-response loop, which was infinitely more useful.
If you're new to the concept of function calling, go find that video. Don't start here.
