Who it's for
Developers who need a fast, hands-on intro to querying App Insights with KQL.
Who should skip it
Engineers looking for a deep dive on OpenTelemetry or advanced dashboard design.
Pros
Provides a real Azure sandbox to run KQL queries.
Covers the core workflow from basic queries to alerts.
Practical exercise at the end is directly useful.
Cons
Skims over the 'why' behind some KQL commands.
Sandbox environment can be slow to initialize.
Focuses heavily on the App Insights UI, less on API/automation.
The KQL sandbox took forever to spin up. I almost closed the tab. Glad I didn't. Once it was running, the exercise was the best part of this whole module. It drops you right into a pre-populated Application Insights instance and has you write actual queries. Much better than just reading slides.
The content is a rapid tour. You write basic queries, find errors, and set up an alert. It does what it says. I've sat through too many 'observability' talks that are just PowerPoints of architecture diagrams. This one at least made me write `requests | where success == false`. The dashboard and workbook sections were mostly just clicking through the UI, but seeing the query results get pinned to a dashboard was a decent payoff. A useful 90 minutes if you have an Azure app and zero idea how to check its logs.
