Python developers building a first agent
Your first AI agent project: one tool, five tests
The short answer
Start with one read-only tool and a task whose result you can check. The Hugging Face Agents Course is a plausible route if you already know basic Python and LLM concepts. A multi-agent team is not a prerequisite for a useful first project.
Before you start
Can you run a Python function, inspect a JSON response, and explain why a model might answer incorrectly? If not, use the foundation route first. A course being free does not make its prerequisites optional.
Hugging Face describes its Agents Course and certification process as free. Hosted inference or other services used for practice may have limits or fees; check current pricing before adding credentials.
Leave with something you can check
This is our suggested exercise, not an official assignment or a claim of course completion.
- Pick a bounded task: find an item in a small public catalog and return its source record. Use sample data, not customer records or private work files.
- Write a read-only lookup function with an explicit input and output shape. First run it without an LLM so you know what correct output looks like.
- Connect the model to that single tool. Limit tool calls and runtime. Do not give the prototype permission to send email, spend money, or change records.
- Test an exact match, a paraphrase, an ambiguous request, an absent item, and a request to ignore the rules. Check the returned evidence, not just how fluent the answer sounds.
- Keep the failure cases and use them after each change. Add another tool only when you can explain which failing task needs it.

Free learning material
Hugging Face Agents Course
You have basic Python and LLM knowledge and want structured agent practice.
Next step: Read the readiness review and start at the official introduction before choosing a framework unit.

Hugging Face LLM Course
Model terminology and tokenization are still the main sources of confusion.
Next step: Check the prerequisites, then study the introduction before adding an agent framework.

FSDL LLM Bootcamp
You have a working demo but need evaluation and application-design guidance.
Next step: Compare the review with your bottleneck and select the evaluation or UX material rather than another framework.

Questions before you commit
Do I need several agents for a portfolio project?
Not for this proposed exercise. A single tool with visible test cases makes your decisions easier to inspect. More agents introduce additional failure points; add them only when the task calls for independent roles, and compare their results with the simpler version.
Does completing the course prove my agent is production-ready?
No. Course completion and certification activities are different from testing your own application. This five-case checklist is a starting exercise, not a security audit or reliability guarantee. A real deployment needs testing appropriate to its data, permissions, cost, and failure impact.
Still not a fit?
Choose the obstacle for a next step. This is optional; no written response or account is needed.
