Reviewer's verdict

A useful, free orientation to the Defender portal's UI, but it's a map, not a driving lesson. Use it to understand the layout before tackling a real lab.

Who it's for

Security students needing a UI tour of Defender XDR

Who should skip it

Anyone looking for hands-on practice or deep query writing

Pros

  • Provides a solid, free overview of the Defender portal UI.
  • Good as a pre-study for certification exams.
  • Covers all key incident management stages conceptually.

Cons

  • No real sandbox; you just read about the features.
  • Advanced hunting section is very brief and shows KQL without practice.
  • Feels more like documentation than a training module.

Staring at that static KQL query in the advanced hunting unit was the most frustrating part. There was no chance to write or even modify it. This whole thing is a guided tour of the Defender XDR portal's UI, not a hands-on lab. You read about managing incidents, see what the menus look like, then take a quiz on terminology. I'm trying to piece together a free SecOps curriculum, and this module feels like a glossary with pictures.

It was fine for an hour of my time, mostly because it's free. It did help me feel less lost when I later watched a video with a real Defender environment. But don't expect to walk away knowing how to actually mitigate anything. You'll know the names of the menus, and that's about it.
