Reviewer's verdict

It's a quick feature list, not a training module. Read it to know what's new, but you'll need to go elsewhere to learn how to use any of it.

Best for

DBAs or data engineers who already know T-SQL and just need a quick list of new features in the 2025 release.

Watch for

Zero hands-on practice; you just read text and look at code snippets.

Who it's for

DBAs or data engineers who already know T-SQL and just need a quick list of new features in the 2025 release.

Who should skip it

Anyone trying to learn how to actually use vector search or pattern matching in SQL.

Pros

  • Covers the very latest T-SQL features for SQL Server 2025.
  • Extremely fast to get through, basically a glorified blog post.
  • Good starting point for finding official documentation links.

Cons

  • Zero hands-on practice; you just read text and look at code snippets.
  • The 'Knowledge Check' is trivial and doesn't test understanding.
  • Explains what the new functions do but not *how* to implement them in a real project.

The JSON_STRING_AGG function example was the first sign this wasn't really a course. It shows a single query, explains that it aggregates JSON strings, and that's it. No practice, no sandbox, no 'try it yourself' scenario. Just a code snippet I could have found in the official documentation. The whole module is like this.

I was hoping the vector AI integration unit would have a small, self-contained lab. Maybe a tiny dataset to run COSINE_DISTANCE or DOT_PRODUCT on? Nothing. It just describes the functions and their purpose. It felt like reading the release notes for a product I don't own yet. The section on pattern matching with 'MATCH' was the same story—it explains the concept of using regular expressions within SQL but gives you no chance to write one or debug a failing pattern. This is pure theory.

The final knowledge check was a multiple-choice quiz that basically asked 'Which new function does X?'. You could pass it just by having the module's text open in another tab. There's no real learning validation here.

I get that it's just an introduction, but it's so high-level that it's almost useless for a student trying to build practical skills. It's a tour, not training. If you're a seasoned DBA who just needs the bullet points for what's new in 2025, maybe this is efficient. For me, it was 30 minutes of reading about tools I still don't know how to use.
