Reviewer's verdict

This is a setup guide, not a course. It gets the job done for a first install, but you'll learn more from five minutes of googling your first error message.

Who it's for

First-time developers setting up VS Code for Python on a new machine.

Who should skip it

Anyone who has used VS Code or pip before.

Pros

  • Covers the absolute basics from installation to running a script.
  • Introduces GitHub Copilot.
  • Quick to complete.

Cons

  • Overly simplistic; 'writing an application' is a single print statement.
  • Doesn't go into useful configurations like `launch.json` or debugging.
  • The 'challenge project' is more of the same.

The big exercise asks you to create a Python application. That 'application' turns out to be a single `print('Hello, World!')` statement inside a `hello.py` file. This isn't really a course; it's a glorified setup wizard. It walks you through installing the Python extension, creating a virtual environment, and running that one line of code. It does get you to use Copilot to generate the print statement, which is... something, I guess.

And then it just ends. No `launch.json`, no debugging, no settings sync. It just links to another 'challenge' module which is the same idea but for a minigame. Don't call this 'configuring a professional development environment' when you skip everything that makes an environment professional.
