Who it's for

Engineers who need to quickly map Azure's security product names to actual network concepts.

Who should skip it

Absolute beginners to networking or those looking for deep-dive tutorials on a single service.

Pros

  • Covers the key Azure network security components in one logical path.
  • Hands-on sandboxes work without needing your own subscription.
  • Good balance between high-level architecture and specific configurations.
  • Focuses on practical defense-in-depth, not just marketing slides.

Cons

  • The self-paced text format can be dry.
  • Assumes you already know why you need things like NSGs or private endpoints.
  • Some sandbox environments can be slow to spin up.

A client project needed to lock down access to a PaaS service, and my Azure networking map was a few years out of date. This path's module on eliminating public exposure with Private Link and Private Endpoints was exactly what I was looking for. No sales pitch, just a sequence of steps in the portal sandbox.

The sandbox environments are the real value here. They spin up a temporary, pre-configured Azure subscription for you to follow along. I could create firewall rules, configure NSGs, and set up a VNet gateway without touching my own credit card or cluttering my dev tenant. Some of the sandbox setup scripts were slow, but they all worked eventually. It beats just watching a video.

The content itself is dense. It’s a series of articles you read, then apply in the sandbox. Not exciting, but efficient. It connects the dots between Virtual Networks, Azure Firewall, VPN Gateways, and the newer Entra Private Access stuff. It's less a 'course' and more an interactive, opinionated tour of the official docs. I skipped the first module on basic segmentation since I knew that part. It’s useful if you’re coming from AWS and need to translate concepts like Security Groups to NSGs and ASGs. A decent 3-hour investment to make sure you're not building on quicksand.
