Reviewer's verdict

It’s a functional, hands-on tutorial for connecting Entra ID to an AML workspace, but it's more of a guided click-through than a course. Use it to practice a specific task, not to learn security fundamentals.

Who it's for

Azure admins transitioning to ML projects or anyone needing a quick, hands-on refresher on Azure AD (Entra) integration with ML workspaces.

Who should skip it

Beginners to Azure, or those looking for deep security theory.

Pros

  • Provides a sandboxed Azure environment, so no personal subscription is needed.
  • Hands-on exercise directly applies the concepts from the text.
  • Covers the modern Microsoft Entra ID naming and concepts.

Cons

  • The text is just a summary of documentation; you're mostly reading and clicking.
  • The exercise feels like a paint-by-numbers tutorial without much room for exploration.
  • Lacks context on *why* these specific security choices are made over others.

Configuring Microsoft Entra security groups is the first major step, and it sets the tone for the whole module: a lot of text for a simple task. I found myself skimming heavily just to get to the hands-on part. It's really just a condensed version of Microsoft Docs articles, walking you through security groups, then Conditional Access, then managed identities.

The exercise—'Configure secure access'—is the only part with any real value. Unfortunately, the sandbox took forever to spin up. I clicked 'Activate sandbox,' waited, got distracted, and came back to find it had timed out. Second try worked, but then I had to hunt for the pre-populated login credentials. The whole setup felt clumsy before I even got to the actual task. You get a temporary Azure subscription and follow a strict set of instructions to create a security group, assign a user to it, and then test their access to an Azure Machine Learning workspace. It works. You click where they tell you to click, copy the UPN they give you, and see the expected outcome. There's zero room for error or exploration. It demonstrates the 'how,' but completely skips the 'why.' Why this policy? What are the trade-offs? What happens if you configure it differently? The module doesn't care.

It does what the title promises, but feels like a support document converted into a learning path. You get a checkmark at the end, but I don't feel like I learned a mental model for securing ML systems, just how to click through one specific Azure workflow.
