Who it's for

Developers wanting a quick, concrete example of connecting OpenAI to a database on Azure.

Who should skip it

Beginners without any Azure experience; those looking for deep theory.

Pros

  • Provides a complete, end-to-end example.
  • Uses relevant, modern services like AKS and Cosmos DB.
  • Code is mostly copy-paste, making it easy to follow.

Cons

  • Moves very quickly without much explanation.
  • AKS setup can feel like overkill and incur costs if not cleaned up.
  • More of a 'how-to' guide than a learning experience.

Building the AI copilot for Contoso Bike Shop was quick, but be ready to actually deploy things. The vector search implementation part was interesting, but it's mostly copying code from the instructions into VS Code. Not a lot of thinking needed.

The biggest catch is the Azure Kubernetes Service part. The guide walks you through setup, but you have to be careful to delete the resource group afterward. I'm paranoid about leaving things running and getting a surprise bill. For a 45-minute project, spinning up an entire AKS cluster felt heavy. It works, you get a functioning URL at the end, but it feels like just following a recipe without learning how to cook.
