Who it's for

Data engineering students or interns needing to understand Databricks governance concepts.

Who should skip it

Absolute beginners or those looking for a deep architectural comparison.

Pros

  • Covers a lot of ground quickly: lineage, audit logs, sharing.
  • The hands-on exercise uses a real notebook, not a simulation.
  • Free and up-to-date.

Cons

  • Feels more like a product tour than a deep dive on governance principles.
  • Requires you to have your own Databricks workspace set up, which takes extra time.
  • Some concepts are introduced too briefly.

Running actual GRANT statements in the exercise notebook was the best part. It's not a simulation. That said, getting my Databricks workspace ready took some time and wasn't included in the module's 2-hour estimate.

The rest of it felt like a quick tour of the Unity Catalog UI. It shows you where the buttons are for things like ABAC and data retention, but doesn't go deep into the 'why' or the trade-offs. I read through it in about an hour.

For a free module, it’s a good reference for specific tasks. I now know how to check lineage graphs and find audit logs, which is probably enough for an entry-level task. It's much better than just reading documentation, but it won't replace a real project.
