This is a necessary but unexciting technical manual. If you're building with generative AI on Azure, you have to know this stuff. It gets the job done, but don't expect it to teach you how to think.

Who it's for
Developers already in the Azure ecosystem who need the official playbook for adding generative AI features.
Who should skip it
Beginners trying to learn core AI concepts, or anyone looking for a vendor-neutral approach.
Pros
Provides the specific code and config for Azure's new Foundry models.
The 'using tools' module is practical and directly applicable.
Sandbox environments are pre-configured, saving setup time.
Cons
Assumes significant prior knowledge of Azure services and terminology.
The Responsible AI section feels more like a compliance checklist than a deep dive.
Heavily skewed towards Python; other backend stacks get little attention.
I had a Python script hitting an OpenAI endpoint and needed to migrate it into Azure's walled garden. This path looked like the map.
The second module, 'Select, deploy, and evaluate Microsoft Foundry models,' is where the real work started. It’s less a 'course' and more a guided tour of the Azure AI Studio UI. Click here, name this, copy that. It gets you a deployed model, which is the point. The sandbox is nice—no fumbling with my own subscription credits just to run a tutorial.
The real meat is the section on making the model use tools. This was the one part that felt like actual development. It steps through defining functions the model can call, which is the core of any useful agentic app. That part I'll probably reference again.
Everything else felt like reading internal documentation. The Responsible AI module was a series of content filters and guardrails you're supposed to bolt on. Necessary for enterprise, I guess, but it felt like ticking boxes. By the time I got to 'Implement a responsible generative AI solution', my brain was numb from portal-clicking.
It's a pure 'how-to' for the Azure stack. It won't teach you *why* RAG works or the theory behind function calling. It just shows you which buttons to press in Microsoft's interface to make it happen. If your job is to ship something on Azure, this path is a necessary evil.
