Who it's for
Developers or security students needing a practical, up-to-date guide to securing secrets in Azure.
Who should skip it
Anyone looking for a deep dive into cryptographic theory or non-Azure key management systems.
Pros
Covers the full lifecycle from setup to monitoring with Defender.
Hands-on sandboxes are a great way to learn without needing a paid Azure account.
Content is very current, including the latest Defender for Cloud integrations.
Cons
Sandboxes can be slow to provision and sometimes time out.
Moves quickly for a true beginner; assumes some familiarity with Azure IAM.
Very focused on the 'how' via the Azure Portal, less on the 'why' or programmatic access.
Waiting for the sandbox to provision was the longest part, but it was worth it. I've tried learning Key Vault from docs before, but it's hard to test access policies and firewall rules without a real setup. This path spins up a temporary Azure subscription for you, so you can actually click through the Defender for Cloud alerts and JIT access configurations.
It took me closer to two hours than the advertised 90 minutes. I was mostly exploring every blade in the portal. The final module on Defender for Cloud connected the dots on how Key Vault fits into the bigger security picture. I do wish the sandboxes came with pre-populated threat data to make the alert simulations feel more real, though. Still a solid way to spend an afternoon getting comfortable with a service I see in a ton of job descriptions.
