Reviewer's verdict

It's a free recipe, not a cooking class. Useful for a quick code sample if you already have an Azure account, but don't expect to learn how to build from scratch.

Who it's for

Students needing a quick, Azure-specific RAG example

Who should skip it

Beginners, anyone without an Azure budget or subscription

Pros

  • Provides a complete, runnable code snippet for a RAG app
  • Uses a modern stack (CosmosDB vCore for MongoDB, Azure OpenAI)
  • Free to read on Microsoft Learn

Cons

  • The 'Exercise' is just a code dump, not a step-by-step build
  • Requires an active Azure subscription to actually run anything
  • Skims over the 'why' behind the code

I spent more time wrestling with the `config.json` file and finding my Azure resource names than I did on the actual logic. The exercise is just one giant block of Python. You don't build anything; you just run someone else's finished script. It's not a tutorial. The code itself works, which is something, but it's not a learning experience.

For a free module, it’s a decent way to grab a working RAG sample for an Azure-specific stack. But calling it a module where you “develop” a copilot is a stretch. If you don’t have an Azure subscription with credits, you can’t run a single line. So much for 'free'. It's more of a quick-start guide for people already committed to the Azure ecosystem.
