Who it's for
Engineers onboarding to an Azure environment who need the official Databricks architectural overview.
Who should skip it
Anyone looking for a hands-on lab environment to actually build something.
Pros
Covers the official Azure Databricks architecture and terminology.
Good overview of Unity Catalog concepts.
Breaks down compute options (clusters, SQL warehouses).
Cons
Zero hands-on exercises; it's all text and diagrams.
Feels like reading documentation for an exam, not building a skill.
Doesn't go deep enough into cost management or security best practices.
It's a textbook. A very long, very dry textbook. I went through this thinking it would show me how to actually *set up* an environment. Instead, it just describes what the buttons do. You get lots of diagrams explaining how Unity Catalog works, what a compute cluster is versus a SQL warehouse, and how everything plugs into the rest of Azure. It's all correct, but it’s just reading.
There are no labs. No sandboxes. You don't configure anything. You just click 'Next' through seven hours of documentation. It feels like studying for a driver's license exam by reading the car manual cover-to-cover instead of getting behind the wheel. The knowledge checks are easy, but I wouldn't trust myself to set up a production environment based on this alone. It gets the concepts across, but my fingers didn't learn a thing.
