A solid, practical exercise. If you have Copilot Enterprise, this shows you exactly how to use the secret scanning agent to fix real problems instead of just writing boilerplate. Worth the hour.

Who it's for
Developers already using GitHub and wanting a practical walkthrough of Copilot Agent's security features.
Who should skip it
Absolute beginners to Git or security concepts. This is not a 'first principles' course.
Pros
Realistic scenario: fixing a hardcoded secret.
Hands-on with a provided Codespaces environment, no local setup needed.
Directly applicable to daily coding hygiene.
Showcases a concrete, useful application of a Copilot Agent.
Cons
The 'Ask' part of the module is less useful than the 'Agent' part.
Assumes you're already bought into the GitHub/VS Code/Copilot ecosystem.
More of a guided feature tour than a deep dive into security patterns.
The provided Codespace environment spun up a Node.js app with a hardcoded connection string right in the server code. A classic mistake. The kind I've made, and the kind I've spent late nights fixing after some scanner yells at me.
This module walks you through letting Copilot Agent find and fix it. That's the whole show. It's not a deep dive into security theory. It's not going to teach you about KMS or Vault. It's about a specific workflow: alert pops, you invoke `/fix`, agent proposes a change to use environment variables, you accept. Done.
The first half, using Copilot Chat to 'ask' about the problem, felt a bit forced. I'd just read the alert description myself. But the second half, with the `/fix` agent, was solid. It correctly identified the hardcoded secret, suggested pulling it into a `.env` file, and modified the code to use `process.env`. It even handled creating the `.env.example` file. This is the stuff that saves you five, maybe ten minutes of tedious refactoring each time. It adds up.
It's a product demo, basically. But it's a good one because it solves a real, annoying problem that every developer runs into. It convinced me the agent isn't just for writing unit tests. I just wish it went one step further and showed how to integrate this with a proper secrets manager, but for a one-hour module, this is what it should be: direct and useful.
