Who it's for
Absolute beginners wanting a quick tour of Microsoft's creative AI tools.
Who should skip it
Anyone looking for a practical tutorial or deep skills in video or image creation.
Pros
Provides a high-level overview of the Copilot-Designer-Clipchamp workflow.
The exercise is a single, clear sandbox environment.
Doesn't require any prior knowledge of video editing or graphic design.
Cons
The content is very superficial, more like a product demo than a lesson.
The 'music video' example feels forced and doesn't teach transferable skills.
Lacks depth on prompting, editing techniques, or integrating assets smoothly.
My prompt for a music video concept, 'a cat programming in a neon-lit room,' gave me four decent images from Designer in the sandbox. Dragging them into Clipchamp’s timeline was easy. Adding a stock electronic track took two clicks. And that was it. I followed the instructions and built the 'music video' in about 15 minutes. It felt less like a project and more like testing a user interface.
The entire module is like this. It's a guided tour, not a workshop. It mentions using Copilot to brainstorm ideas, but the examples are generic. It shows you where the 'auto-compose' button is in Clipchamp but offers zero guidance on pacing, cuts, or why one choice is better than another. I get it, this is for beginners, but it feels like it's aimed at someone who has never seen a video editor before. The content is just a series of screenshots and bullet points describing what each tool does.
I spent more time trying to figure out if I could connect my own accounts or use the skills elsewhere than on the actual content. The answer is... not really. You learn where buttons are, but you don't build any intuition for creative work. It shows you a workflow is possible, but you're on your own to figure out how to make it good.
