Reviewer's verdict

A quick read that explains the 'what' and 'why' but completely skips the 'how'. It's a product pitch, not a training module.

Who it's for

Project managers or architects wanting a high-level overview of a potential tool.

Who should skip it

Developers looking for a hands-on guide to using Copilot for modernization.

Pros

  • Quick, high-level introduction to the concept.
  • Defines the 'Modernization Agent' idea.
  • Includes a case study, though it's brief.

Cons

  • Zero hands-on practice; it's all text and diagrams.
  • Feels like a sales deck for a product that isn't fully available.
  • The 'workflow' is too abstract to be implemented.
  • Doesn't show you *how* to refactor anything.

The case study section shows a diagram of a legacy .NET app moving to Azure Kubernetes Service. It's a nice slide. Then the module ends. There's no lab, no code, no prompt, no demo of Copilot actually doing the refactoring. Just a diagram of the destination.

That's this whole module in a nutshell. It's a 50-minute PowerPoint deck presented as a 'course.' You read about a 'Modernization Agent' and a 'Modernization Workflow,' but these are just marketing terms for a process. I was expecting to see Copilot take a chunk of old code—maybe something with a deprecated library or a clunky monolithic function—and help me break it down. Instead, I got bullet points explaining that Copilot *can* do this. Show, don't tell.

They spend a lot of time differentiating this 'app modernization' capability from the regular Copilot I use every day. Fine. But the differentiation seems to be a bunch of aspirational workflow diagrams. I still don't know what specific prompts to use, what the agent's limitations are, or how to manage its output when modernizing a real-world, messy codebase. It talks about refactoring legacy code without showing a single line of legacy code being refactored. I left with a vague idea of a future product, not a new skill. It feels like an advertisement for a feature that's still in private preview. This isn't for builders.
