It’s a 15-minute product demo disguised as a training module. It shows you the happy path but teaches you nothing about how to actually use the tool when things go wrong.

Who it's for
Absolute beginners wanting a quick demo of the Copilot for Excel interface.
Who should skip it
Anyone looking to learn practical data analysis or troubleshooting skills.
Pros
Extremely short, can be completed on a coffee break.
Shows what the user interface looks like and the types of prompts it can handle.
The sample 'Sales Data' table is easy to understand.
Cons
It's a guided product tour, not a training module.
The exercise is just clicking 'copy' on pre-written prompts and pasting them.
Doesn't cover what to do when Copilot misunderstands or gives a wrong answer.
The 'Knowledge Check' is trivial and tests reading comprehension of the demo text.
The sample Excel file came with a perfectly formatted table named 'SalesData'. My team’s spreadsheets look nothing like this. Ours are a mess of merged cells, missing headers, and notes in the margins from three different people. That’s where I actually need help, and this module completely sidesteps that reality.
The core 'exercise' involves copying pre-written prompts like "Add a column that shows the profit margin for each product" and pasting them into the Copilot chat box. You don't write them yourself. You don't have to think. You just copy, paste, and watch it work perfectly. It’s a demo. It’s like watching a video of someone else driving a car and calling it a driving lesson.
My main frustration is that it doesn't teach any of the crucial 'how-to' skills. What’s the mental model here? Am I supposed to talk to it like a person or write commands like a programmer? How do I phrase a prompt to get a pivot table instead of a bar chart? What happens when it misunderstands 'profit margin' and uses the wrong columns? The module offers zero guidance on troubleshooting or refining prompts, which is 90% of the actual work when using these AI tools. It feels like marketing material designed to get managers excited enough to approve the Microsoft 365 upgrade.
