Reviewer's verdict

It's a recipe, not a cooking class. It gets one specific job done if you're building for Microsoft 365, but you won't learn much about how the kitchen works.

Best for

Developers who need a quick, official 'hello world' for a Copilot declarative agent.

Watch for

The 'challenge' is more of a follow-the-instructions tutorial.

Who it's for

Developers who need a quick, official 'hello world' for a Copilot declarative agent.

Who should skip it

Anyone looking for a deep dive into RAG, agent architecture, or non-Microsoft stacks.

Pros

  • Official, up-to-date procedure for a basic declarative Copilot.
  • Hands-on project lets you build something, not just read.
  • Quick to complete; doesn't waste time on theory.

Cons

  • The 'challenge' is more of a follow-the-instructions tutorial.
  • Doesn't explain the 'why' behind the steps.
  • Stays entirely within the Microsoft 365 ecosystem.

They call it a 'challenge project,' which is generous. It’s a paint-by-numbers tutorial. You download a starter project, create a dev tunnel, then copy-paste a manifest file. The real work is just changing a couple of placeholders. The ‘agent’ you build is just a declarative JSON file pointing the Copilot to a document. There's no code, no logic, just configuration.

My main issue is that this teaches you nothing about building robust agents. It’s a very specific recipe for a very specific Microsoft-flavored task: making a Copilot aware of one of your Word documents. The second you want to do something more complex—like connecting to a real-time API, handling conversational state, or debugging why the grounding data isn't working—this module leaves you completely lost. It's the equivalent of a 'Hello, World!' that only works on one specific compiler with one specific flag.

I got it working in under an hour. The instructions are clear enough if you just want the checkmark. But I walked away with zero new mental models about how agents actually function. It’s all black box. You hook up the pipes according to the diagram, and water comes out. You don't learn any plumbing. It’s a frustratingly shallow experience for something with 'challenge' in the title.
