Who it's for

C#/.NET developers wanting a quick, official recipe for Azure OpenAI.

Who should skip it

Python users, absolute beginners, anyone without Azure access.

Pros

  • Official SDK usage shown clearly
  • Short, fits into a lunch break
  • Hands-on exercise with actual code to run

Cons

  • Requires your own Azure OpenAI service access, which isn't free to use
  • Sticks to basics; doesn't cover advanced prompting or fine-tuning
  • More of a quickstart guide than a deep learning module

Running the code locally hit a wall. You need your own Azure OpenAI service provisioned. The sandbox doesn't include it, so you’re on your own for setup and any costs. I was hoping for a completely self-contained lab, but I ended up spending more time in the Azure portal than in Visual Studio.

Once you have the keys, the exercise is straightforward. It’s mostly copy-pasting official SDK boilerplate to make a `ChatCompletions` call. The second exercise, on improving quality, just shows how to tweak temperature and add a system message. It’s a good 101 on the basic parameters, but that’s it. This is less a 'course' and more an interactive version of the SDK's README file. Useful for a quick pattern, but I had to find other tutorials for anything like RAG or function calling.
