A niche, hardware-gated recipe for integrating Azure Speech into a HoloLens project. It's more of a quickstart guide than a learning experience.

Who it's for
Developers with an existing HoloLens 2 and Unity setup looking for a quick recipe.
Who should skip it
Beginners without hardware or those wanting to understand the 'why' behind the code.
Pros
Provides ready-to-use code snippets for MRTK and Azure Speech.
The exercise sandboxes work without needing your own Azure subscription initially.
Covers both online (cloud) and offline (local) speech recognition.
Cons
Requires a HoloLens 2 to actually see the result, which is a major barrier.
Acts more like a recipe to copy-paste than a tutorial that explains concepts.
The provided Unity project is just a skeleton; you're mostly just dropping in scripts.
The Unity project you download is totally empty. The exercises are just dragging pre-made scripts and prefabs into the scene, then copy-pasting code blocks from the webpage to connect the Azure service. You don't write any actual logic. I don't own a HoloLens, so I couldn't even deploy it to see if it worked. The whole thing felt like assembling IKEA furniture with half the instructions missing.
The offline speech-to-text part seemed promising, since that avoids cloud costs. But again, it's just dropping in a different component without explaining how the on-device model works or its limitations. I finished it in about twenty minutes and my main takeaway was a folder of scripts I don't fully understand. It's a technical demo, not a real lesson. It proves the integration is possible, but I didn't learn how to do it myself for a new project.
